The Senate Committee on Education will be meeting on April 14 at 10:00 am in the Capitol Extension in Room E1.028 to hear invited testimony followed by public testimony on two interim charges:

  • Senate Interim Charge #1: Review the redesign of high school English EOC exams. For the entire STAAR assessment program, review accommodations available to eligible students as a result of the elimination of the STAAR Modified exam pursuant to changes in federal accountability regulations. Additionally, review the redesign of the STAAR Alternate assessment. 
  • Senate Interim Charge #2: Monitor the implementation of legislation addressed by the Senate Committee on Education, 83rd Legislature, Regular and Called Sessions, and make recommendations for any legislation needed to improve, enhance and/or complete implementation. Specifically, monitor the following: HB 5, relating to public school accountability, including assessment, and curriculum requirements; providing a criminal penalty. Public testimony will be limited to two (2) minutes per person.  

In the announcement of the hearing, the Senate Education Committee noted that the STAAR writing portion of Charge #1 is not included for this hearing and will be taken up on a date to be determined.

The Senate Education Committee chair is Dan Patrick, one of the two candidates in the run-off election for the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor.
