Although elections in 2014 gave us a preview of who would make up the 84th Session there are still a handful of races ongoing which means the faces in the 84th will be changing even after the first day of session. Below is a list of what is known and what will be sorted in the next few weeks.

Senate
The Senate will be made up of 20 Republicans and 11 Democrats. Because there will be a runoff in SD 26, we don’t yet know who will serve as Senator from that district but we do know it will be a Democrat. Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer and Rep. Jose Menendez, both Democrats, were the top two vote getters in the January 6 special election.

Of the 31 Senators, 9 will be newly elected freshmen (8 are Republicans) and 5 will be serving their second term as Senators (4 are Republicans). Five freshmen Senators are coming over from the House this session: Brandon Creighton-R, Van Taylor-R, Charles Perry-R, Lois Kolkhorst-R and whichever House member wins the above-mentioned SD 26 special election runoff.

House of Representatives
The special election for HD 13 taking place January 13 and the future special election to replace whichever House member wins SD 26 will finalize House membership. Assuming the winner of those races will be from the same party as the previous member, the 84th Legislature House of Representatives will be composed of 98 Republicans and 52 Democrats.

Of the 150 House members, 28 will be first-term freshmen and 38 will be serving their second term.  Of the 28 freshmen, 23 will be Republicans and 5 will be Democrats (assuming no seats change parties in upcoming elections.)
