Polls opened at 7 a.m. this morning and will be closing tonight at 7 p.m. (anyone in line at 7 p.m. can still cast their vote.) for the November 3 General Election. An unusual election season, which includes 9.7 million Texans or 57% of registered voters voting early, could lead to delays in reporting and tallying results. HillCo Partners will continue to monitor and provide you with the latest details as we continue our election coverage.

Texas Legislature

The makeup of the 87th Legislature has already begun to take shape. 16 of the state Senate’s 31 seats are on this year’s ballot and 14 of these have major-party challengers this cycle. The current make up of the Texas Senate is 19 Republicans and 12 Democrats. A special election runoff has also been scheduled on December 9 to fill the unexpired term for Senate District 30.

House membership will include at least 12 freshmen; three incumbents were defeated in primaries and nine incumbents are not seeking re-election. House membership will also include at least 5* second-term members, based on incumbents without major-party challengers. The number of freshmen could increase based on the outcomes of the 94 races in which incumbents are facing major-party challengers. The current makeup of the House is 83 Republicans and 67 Democrats.

*Members who returned to the House after not serving for a session or more are not included in these numbers.
