With the retirement of Sen. Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock) to become the new chancellor of the Texas Tech University System, a vacancy has been created in Senate District 28.  Gov. Perry recently called a special election to fill the seat and the election will be held September 9. The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of Duncan’s unexpired term which ends in 2016.
 
The deadline for candidates to file for a place on the special election ballot was August 1. The following candidates will be on the ballot:
 
Jodey Arrington (R-Lubbock)
Former Texas Tech University vice chancellor; former special advisor to President George W. Bush
 
E. M. Garza (R-Wolfforth)
2012 candidate for SD 28 (received 15% of votes); transportation/logistics business
 
Delwin Jones (R-Lubbock)
Former state representative 1964-1972, 1989-2010; businessman and farmer
 
Kerry McKennon (L-Petersburg)
West Texas native; actor/director
 
Charles Perry (R-Lubbock)
State representative from HD 83 2011-2014; terminated reelection bid to run for SD 28; CPA
 
Greg Wortham (D-Sweetwater)
Former mayor of Sweetwater; founded West Texas Wind Consortium
