In December 2011, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved HHSC’s request for a five-year Medicaid waiver that allowed for the expansion of Medicaid managed care in Texas and creation of two funding pools. One promotes innovative health-care collaborations designed to strengthen health care delivery systems, and the other provides funding for the state’s hospitals that serve large numbers of uninsured patients.
As HHSC approaches the final year of what has come to be known as the Medicaid Transformation Waiver, efforts are underway to renew the waiver. HHSC has until September 30 to submit its renewal request.
Prior to that, HHSC will hold a series of public hearings around the state to get input from stakeholders and those who have helped build the projects funded through the waiver. HHSC’s draft extension request is expected to be posted to the Medicaid Transformation Waiver website on July 3. People who subscribe to that page will get an email alert when the document is posted.
