Dr. Robert Durón announced this week that after almost two years as TEA’s Deputy Commissioner for Finance & Administration, he will resign to become Associate Executive Direction of District Services at the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB).  Durón joined TEA in March 2012 as deputy commissioner for then-Commissioner Robert Scott.

Prior to his work at TEA, Durón was the superintendent of the 55,000 student San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) for almost six years.  During his years in San Antonio, Durón played a key role in bringing financial stability to the district by cutting its operating budget by $64 million, increasing its fund balance by more than 20% and passing a $515 million bond package in 2010. Before taking the helm in SAISD, he spent three years as superintendent of the Socorro Independent School District in El Paso. Before assuming the top position in Socorro, Durón was an assistant superintendent in the Clear Creek ISD where he worked for legendary Texas superintendent John Wilson. Durón also has held site administration posts at the elementary and middle school levels in Waco ISD, where he grew up and began his career as a teacher in 1981. Durón holds a doctorate in educational administration from Baylor University and two degrees from Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Durón will remain at TEA until the end of the month. Durón’s resignation leaves the state’s education agency with no senior managers with prior experience leading a school district.
