The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) sought an opinion in June from the Texas Attorney General regarding clarification on the process of adopting instructional materials. The Attorney General, Ken Paxton, responded in his opinion on Dec. 4 that the SBOE has only those powers "specifically delegated by statute" and that it "may not substitute its judgment for the lawful exercise of those powers and duties by the trustees." The AG’s opinion has generated several news stories and editorial comments, including this one that topped the editorial page of the Austin American-Statesman on Thursday, December 10.
