Independent Laura Thompson has won the special election runoff to fill the unexpired term of retired Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon in HD 120. The unexpired term will run until the end of 2016. Thompson is the first person elected to serve in the Legislature since 1959 with no partisan affiliation.

The Democratic primary election for the full term of HD 120 beginning in 2017 was won by Barbara Gervin Hawkins. Hawkins is running unopposed in November. Thompson had petitioned for a spot on the ballot in November but media sources report she did not qualify.
