During a state capitol hearing this month, the public will have the chance to comment on the recent Sunset staff report which recommends that the five Texas health and human services agencies be combined into one agency.
The Sunset Commission will be hearing staff presentations and agency responses during a November 12 meeting. A second meeting is being held November 13 to provide an opportunity for public comment. The agenda for these two meetings is available online.
“We are working on initiatives to implement the Legislature’s vision of efficient, coordinated system, and I stand ready to follow the Sunset Commission’s recommendations,” Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Kyle Janek wrote in HHSC’s response to the Sunset report. The Sunset report addresses 14 other issues besides consolidation, and offers many more recommendations related to those issues. The full report is available online.
The Sunset Advisory Commission is expected to decide in December what to recommend to the Texas Legislature. Those final recommendations will then take the form of legislation for consideration when the Legislature convenes in January.
