The Sunset Advisory Commission met on Wednesday, February 19 to take care of organizational matters and to hear an update from Sunset staff regarding their plan for moving forward with the coming session’s reviews.

Sunset staff director, Ken Lavine, described the upcoming process to commission members.  Staff evaluations are currently being prepared and staff has begun to focus on the areas where they expect the most recommendations will fall.  Staff reports will begin to be published early in the summer and a public hearing will be held.  Later in the summer, commission members will vote on the first set of recommendations and staff will begin preparing legislation.

The commission adopted their review schedule, operating budget and commission rules.  The commission directed legislative counsel to identify references in statute for each agency up for Sunset review that do not use person first respectful language when referencing persons with disabilities and to draft language that uses the preferred language.  Finally, the commission directed staff to revise health and human service agencies statutes by removing and correcting obsolete, duplicative and conflicting references.
