SB 738 relating to a parental role in determining sanctions applied to a public school campus under certain circumstances was brought before House lawmakers again tonight. A floor amendment, also known as a parent trigger, by Rep. Villarreal previously adopted on the 21st was reconsidered and removed. The amendment would allow for a public school that is rated academically unacceptable for two consecutive years to be turned over to a charter school operator with the consent of a majority of the parents of the school.
Tonight, Rep. Villarreal debated a similar amendment to SB 738. However, he stated this amendment was bracketed to schools in Bexar county. This bracketed amendment was adopted with 86 ayes and 46 nays.
After the Villarreal bracketed amendment was adopted, the bill was postponed on third reading until 10:30 p.m. tonight.
