On Monday, May 8, Attorney General Ken Paxton filed suit against Travis County, the City of Austin, and several city and county officials seeking to forestall constitutional challenges to forthcoming law passed in SB 4, the sanctuary cities bill. Attorney General Paxton brings this suit under the Declaratory Judgment Act, which allows a state to seek to resolve an issue in one forum and avoid potential lawsuits on that issue. SB 4 was signed by the Governor on May 7 and should become effective on September 1, 2017. The full complaint is available here.
