In the January 26 runoff for HD 118 John Lujan (R) won the seat with 1,879 votes while Tomas Uresti (D) garnered 1,708 votes. Lujan will finish the final 11 months of this term after Joe Farias retired last year. Lujan and Uresti will both run for the seat again in the 2016 Primaries. Gov. Greg Abbott has also announced May 7, 2016 as the special election date to fill the HD 139 seat recently vacated by Sylvester Turner (sworn in as Houston's Mayor on Jan. 2). The early voting period for the special election will be held from April 25, 2016 to May 3, 2016. The candidate who wins the special election will finish Turner's term.
