“We hope to appoint an executive director quickly,” said Victor Vandergriff, chairman of the board of the new Texas state agency, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV), at its initial board meeting. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) began operations Monday, November 2.

The new agency has more than 600 employees and will oversee the state’s motor vehicle services, including registering and titling passenger vehicles, granting operating authority to commercial motor carriers, regulating dealerships and helping to prevent auto burglary and theft.

Four former Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) divisions—Vehicle Titles and Registration (VTR), Motor Carrier (MCD), Motor Vehicle (MVD) and Auto Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority (ABTPA)—will become the new TxDMV.

The new agency will not issue driver’s licenses. That function remains the responsibility of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
