State Representative Lyle Larson has sent a letter to President Donald Trump urging the President to renegotiate a 1944 Treaty with Mexico, which sought to allocate and manage water usage on the Rio Grande and Colorado rivers. Larson’s letter notes that Mexico is required under the agreement to deliver 350,000 acre-feet of Rio Grande water on a consistent basis in exchange for U.S. deliveries of Colorado River water. Larson alleges that Mexico has taken advantage of exemptions for cases of “extraordinary drought or serious accident” to avoid its obligations, and that President Trump should consider renegotiation of the treaty or withholding of U.S. water deliveries to ensure consistent delivery of water to South Texas communities moving forward.
