The Texas Education Agency (TEA) issued guidance outlining school system and educator responsibilities relating to student walkouts and other disruptions taken place during school day instruction. The guidance emphasizes the responsibility of schools to maintain student safety and an orderly learning environment.

TEA stated that students who leave campus or disrupt instruction may be penalized with an unexcused absence, which can jeopardize course credit and attendance-related funding. Schools are additionally encouraged to notify parents of the students leaving school property.

The guidance clarifies that educators may not “encourage or facilitate” a student’s departure from classes or school activities. They are required to comply with the Educator Code of Ethics and local policies. Alleged violations may result in investigation and enforcement action.

TEA noted that school districts must comply with state attendance requirements, and that failure to do so may result in an attendance audit or agency investigation. The complaint process is outlined; concerns should first be addressed through the local grievance process, with TEA investigating complaints alleging violations of state law as appropriate.
