The 89th Legislature comprised of the House and Senate will have some new faces. 15 of the state Senate’s 31 seats are on this year’s ballot, 10 of these have major-party challengers, and 5 are unopposed.
House membership will include at least 32 freshmen; 16 incumbents* were defeated in primaries (*including HD2 Jill Dutton in who did serve in a legislative session) and 16 incumbents are not seeking re-election. The number of freshmen could increase based on the outcomes of the races in which incumbents are facing major-party challengers.

- Texas House: 86 Republicans & 64 Democrats
- Texas Senate: 19 Republicans & 12 Democrats
