PFAS Aquatic Life Criteria and Benchmarks

The EPA has finalized water quality concentrations for 10 PFAS that could negatively impact aquatic life. The levels, referred to as water quality criteria and benchmarks, are not regulatory and are not required. These concentrations can be used to help develop water quality standards which inform the implementation of other Clean Water Act Programs.

Proposal to Add Individual PFAS and PFAS Categories to the Toxics Release Inventory

The EPA is proposing to add 16 individual per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and 15 PFAS categories representing more than 100 individual PFAS to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). It would also designate them as chemicals of special concern so they must meet more robust reporting requirements, including reporting even for small concentrations. TRI data is public and facilities are required to report on discharge of chemicals listed in the TRI annually. Facilities must also report on practices used to prevent or reduce the generation of these chemicals as waste.
