On December 19, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst issued an interim charge to the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice related to sentencing for intoxication manslaughter offenses.

Dewhurst instructed the committee to review cases involving the imposition of probation rather than imprisonment or commitment for adult and juvenile intoxication manslaughter offenders. He also asked the committee to make recommendations to ensure that intoxication manslaughter sentences include appropriate punishment levels, maintain public safety, and serve to deter driving under the influence.

Dewhurst will continue to release interim charges in the coming weeks.
