The Texas Education Agency has released their 2023 Annual Report. Which overviews TEA’s strategic plan for 2023, school finance, 88th Legislature updates to school funding, student demographics/outcomes, the special education process, and assessment, among others. A spotlight on the report can be found below.
TEA Strategic Plan/Strategic Priorities
The report overviews four of the TEA’s top strategic priorities:
- Recruit, Support and Retain Teachers and Principals
- Build a Foundation for Reading and Math
- Connect High School to Career and College
- Improve Low-Performing Schools
School Finance
The report overviews changes in annual per student funding. In 2021-2022 per student funding totaled $14,928 which TEA notes is a 42% increase since 2011; totaling $80.6b. Additionally, the report shows that during 2023-2024, there was a $6.6b increase in state funding for Maintenance and Operations funding.
School Safety and Security
The report discusses the The Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine (TCHATT) initiative. 739 districts are enrolled in the program and more than 3.7m students can access services. 2022-2025 safety and security funding for schools breaks down as follows:
- $17m Silent Panic Alert Technology Grant
- $400m School Safety Standards Formula Grant
- $1.1b Safety and Facilities Enhancement Grant
The Report overviews results from the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress. Texas ranks as follows:
- 33rd in reading grade 4 (moved up 9 places in the ranking)
- 14th in math grade 4 (moved down 2 places in the ranking)
- 41st in reading grade 8 (moved up 5 places in the ranking)
- 25th in math grade 8 (moved up 7 places in the ranking)
