Over 170 challengers and open seat candidates have taken first steps towards running for a Texas state or federal office in 2018. TxElects.com points out that the official filing period for candidates on the November 2018 ballot does not begin until November 11, 2017. Offices up for the November election include statewide offices, all 36 seats in U.S. House of Representatives, 1 U.S. State Senate seat, 15 state senators, all 150 state representatives, and seven members of the State Board of Education.
 
Open Seats

  • State Board of Education Member David Bradley has announced he will not seek an 8th term in November 2018. Following Bradley's announcement, Friendswood ISD Board Member Matt Robinson has announced he will seek the Republican nomination for SBOE District 7.
  • Rep. Mark Keough (R-The Woodlands) announced he will run for Montgomery County Judge and will not seek another term for HD 15.
  • U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Plano) is not seeking re-election for CD 3.
  • U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-El Paso) is not seeking re-election for CD 16.
