Upcoming Committee Hearings: Legislative News from Texas

The HB 3 Conference Committee held their organizational meeting and reviewed the differences between the two bills on May 10.

The Senate moved to not concur in SB 12 (Huffman), relating to contributions to the Teacher Retirement System, and set the following conferees Sens.: Joan Huffman (R-Houston), Jane Nelson (R-Flower Mound), Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood), Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham), and Royce West (D-Dallas).

Key Deadlines/Dates of Interest

Friday, May 17 (130th Day) – The last day for House to consider local HBs on 2nd and 3rd reading & the first day the Senate can consider bills/resolutions the first day they posted on the Notice of Intent.

Saturday, May 18 (131st Day) – The last day for House committees to report SBs/SJRs.

Sunday, May 19 (132nd Day) – by 10 p.m. the last House daily calendar with SBs/SJRs must be distributed.

Spotlight of Bills on the Move

HB 2570 (Zerwas) relating to the award of grants by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Oversight Committee and the associated HJR 12 (Zerwas) relating to the maximum bond amount authorized for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas were unanimously passed out of the Senate on 5/10 and will now travel back to the House for concurrence.

HB 440 (Murphy) relating to general obligation bonds issued by political subdivisions was voted out of the Senate Property Tax committee unanimously on 4/29 and was first placed on the intent calendar for 5/13.
