Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has written the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services urging them to approve Texas’ pending request for a waiver for the Healthy Texas Women program from certain Social Security Act provisions and restore Medicaid funding to the program. The Texas Medicaid Women’s Health program was cut off from Medicaid funding in 2012 after the state Legislature enacted a law preventing taxpayer money from going to abortion providers. Texas submitted a proposal for federal funding to HHS on June 28, 2017, hoping to receive funding starting September 2018, but has yet to receive a determination on its application.
