Special Election Update – HD 120 and HD 139
Because of incumbents retiring in House District 120 and 139, Ruth Jones McClendon and Sylvester Turner respectively, special elections were held on May 7 to fill the unexpired terms which conclude at the end of this year.

The Governor has set August 2nd for the Special Runoff for HD 120, since the special election didn’t result in a candidate surpassing 50% of the vote. The Special Runoff will be between Democrat Lou Miller and Independent Laura Thompson. Neither of these candidates will be in the Democratic primary runoff that will be held May 24 to determine who will serve the next term beginning in January. However, Thompson could be eligible for the general election ballot if she gathers enough signatures to run as an Independent.

In HD 139, Democrat Jarvis Johnson received 83% of the vote and will be filling the unexpired term for that district. Johnson will face off against Democrat Kimberly Willis in the May 24 primary election runoff.
