First Day of Prefiling

Yesterday, November 14, was the first day of bill filing for the upcoming 88th Legislative Session and 921 bills and resolutions were filed (646 HBs and 198 SBs). Of note, HB 1-20, HB 200, and SB 1-30 have been reserved. It is customary for lower-numbered bills to be reserved for leadership priority legislation. This is 381 more bills and resolutions than were filed on the first day of bill filing for the 87th Session; overall, 10,000 bills and resolutions were filed during that session.

In comparison:

  • 465 bills and resolutions (286 HBs and 139 SBs) were filed on the first day of prefiling for the 86th Session
  • 525 bills and resolutions (292 HBs and 194 SBs) on the first day for the 85th

Key Dates

The 88th Session begins on January 10, 2023. The last day to contribute to statewide candidates and legislative members is December 10th, 2022. Texas statute prohibits political contributions beginning 30 days before the first session day, so contributions cannot be made starting December 11th, 2022. Sine die is May 29, 2023.
