Beginning June 1, 2018, former State Senator Tommy Williams – who currently serves as a Senior Advisor in the Office of the Governor – will lead Health and Human Services on an interim basis. A search for a permanent replacement will begin immediately.  Executive Commissioner Charles Smith announced his retirement earlier this month from state service effective May 31. Smith was appointed executive commissioner by Governor Greg Abbott in 2016.  During his tenure, Smith oversaw the health and human services system’s response to Hurricane Harvey and the negotiation of the 5-year 1115 waiver extension with CMS. “During his time at the agency, Smith has been widely known for his thoughtful and deliberate nature, his absolute transparency and his roll-up-your sleeves approach to tackling problems,” the HHSC press release stated. Smith will continue serving as Executive Commissioner until May 31, 2018.
